![]() though a couple of indies have come close. It's the game that proved video games can do character development as well as any other medium and no AAA games have really been able to match it in the 9 years since then. It has nuance, it has quiet moments, it has loud moments, it has sincere character development. ![]() It uses a familiar trope- zombies- but was arguably the first game that focused on character over plot. However, TLoU story is anything but basic. It's uses the templete of "snarky charismatic action star and does it really well". That would imply that there aren't good reasons other people adore them. I don't go around calling the Metal Gear Series "overhyped" just because they aren't for me. It's also my 2nd favorite game of all-time because I'm primarily a story driven gamer.Ĭalling a game overhyped is poor phrasing. Maybe it’s just an example of how open world games can be quite tiring and not always live up to expectations.Īnd imo, the Last of Us is simultaneously the only stealth series I've ever thoroughly enjoyed and the best story ever put to videogame. I feel a bit sad about this, and also a bit puzzled, because it’s got such great reviews. Main quests and side quests alike seem to just be rather samey either “go here and wipe out this camp”, or “go here and fetch this thing”.Īnd, after 20 hours, I really don’t care much about the story any more, so I don’t feel that motivated to play - even if the mechs are cool. ![]() The main enemy becomes a bunch of human tribesmen, taking the focus off the far more interesting mech animals (in my opinion). Then they killed off all of those early characters, and Aloy becomes rather dull, surrounded by a parade of other, equally dull NPCs. Beautiful world, great graphics, simple enough gameplay (even the crafting is pretty easy and not a chore), and most importantly, Aloy had a great backstory, and I cared about the characters she grows up with. I did like 8 hours in one sitting (which I hadn’t planned), loving every minute. I got Horizon Zero Dawn on PC around January this year, and I was stoked to finally have the opportunity to play what looked like such a cool game.
